Where to look
In rough order of how little work each option takes on a Jeep Cherokee unit.

Top label of the chassis
Remove the centre stack trim and slide the unit forward. The label on the top face has a line starting with T followed by eleven characters. Copy the whole thing.

Rear of the chassis
On Grand Cherokee WJ units the serial is repeated in small stamped type on the rear panel next to the connector block.

Entering the code
However you got the four digits, this is how they go in.

Turn the ignition to run. The display shows CODE.

Enter the four digits using preset buttons 1 to 4.

Press the AM/FM button to confirm.
Tips from the workbench
The centre stack on XJ Cherokees is held by four Phillips screws behind the trim bezel — no DIN keys needed.
Characters that look like the letter S in stamped type are usually the digit 5.
